The manual says
Cam Chain Tensioner

What the manual says:

The manual has about 9 pages of instructions; it looks pretty straight forward…

  1. Disconnect battery. (good time to remove steering wheel & replace dash bulbs)
  2. Drain radiator and block.
  3. Take the intake stuff off (everything but the manifold)
  4. Remove throttle cables etc. (Good time to "fix" the new throttle cable -- not fully clipped to firewall)
  5. Take the overflow off
  6. Take the front exhaust pipes from manifold
  7. Disconnect heater hoses.
  8. Disconnect harness connectors @ top of engine
  9. Disconnect evaporative purge valve connector (under intake)
  10. Disconnect vacuum hoses
  11. Disconnect sensors etc.
  12. Remove distributor cap, dust shield & adapter.
  13. Remove the intake manifold support bracket
  14. Remove valve cover
  15. Remove upper camshaft timing chain cover. (There’s different length bolts…)
  16. Put engine to TDC & check dowel (good picture in the manual)
  17. Remove timing chain tensioner (if we remove it; let’s replace it)
  18. Remove cam sprocket & use stiff wire to support it.
  19. (standard warning about crank not moving)
  20. Gradually undo the bolts in the standard chris-cross method; whack with rubber mallet if stuck.

Installing is pretty basic & reverse with extra warnings

  • Thread chase & clean out everything & don’t let anything in…
  • Don’t use a metal brush or scraper to clean the head (aluminum blah blah blah)
  • Use the “special 3mm thicker gasket” if the head is milled.
  • Always use new head bolts.
  • The only “special tool” it talks about is 11 2 110; which is basically a protractor to do the last 35° tighten bit.
  • There’s a bit about pouring oil down the side of the camshaft timing chain cover and then turning the engine over by hand.
  • Adjust valves (again)
  • Refill cooling system (again)
  • Install exhaust front pipe to exhaust manifold using “new nuts”. Coat exhaust pipe flanges with copper paste…
  • Change oil (I have a filter, weee! that'll save me $2)
  • “when reinstalling upper timing chain cover, use new gasket and seal lower corners of cover (where cover meets the head gasket) using “3-Bond® 1207 or equivalent silicon sealer.
